CIPTA 2k11, such a let down and up

When i saw the ad(?) for the CIPTA event, i was very much excited for it. Not only would i be able to see the creative output of local Bruneians but also the possible invention that could put Brunei at the worlds' attention. Basically, i was hyped up for the event >:)

Me, my siblings arrived at ICC after Friday prayers. Luckily for us, there was plenty of available parking spaces, possibly due to the fact that it was the day after the opening of CIPTA 2k11. Not because it was lame or other such negative reasons.

Walking past the freaky paintings of ICC, I saw one of the inventions... a ladybug shaped cover for chemistry. Next to that was a "portable" study desk and a solar powered water heater. 'Ok, this was just the start,' i thought to myself after looking at these inventions...

Then we continued on to see one of the 4 top inventions that really left a good impression on me. It was a prototype called EVA, E(something) Visual A(something). A device to help the visually impaired, i think. I couldn't thoroughly check the device as it was one of the 'crowded' areas and the inventor was busy talking to them. From what I could observe from behind 'crowd', EVA was built with parts of LEGO, and parts of electronics and it functions by vibrating when the sensors of the device has an object in front of it. Impressive, and not at all disappointing to see.

Next to them was a device called, C2M2. Sounds futuristic but it aint :L It stands for Coconut C(something) Milk Machine. A modified coconut machine, i guessed. Walking past them, i saw the another invention... a buzzer for a quiz. Disappointment was really gaining up on me by then.
Soon after, we visited an information section of CIPTA regarding BLNG.

Leaving the info booths, we walked upon the second impressive invention of the whole event. An invention that was a portable mini generator, i presumed. The inventor left his booth to his nephew and friends, which even though his info was understandable, left me an unfulfilled gap of knowledge regarding the generator. It was pretty cool to see this being made by a local Bruneian. Props to the man. Next to them, was a solar powered scare crow, which was cool to see. However, what wasn't cool to see was the inventor sleeping, must have been tuckered out that day. Leaving him unbothered, we continued on the next and possibly most astonishing invention of them all.

Though it was model of an automatic house that as the inventor says will be implemented into a Brunei house one day, it left me and my siblings pretty amazed. To open the door (my hand acted as the 'person') , just walk through the sensor, it opens and like any other sensor, once there is no detection, it closes the door. To open an aircon, it uses the same kind of sensor. Summing it up, you get into a room, stuff turns on and when you're not there, everything closes. Pretty nifty, I'd say but the inventor better include high security into it seeing that as anyone could get into the house with those sensors.

After that nothing much to see, other than an invention and concept of changing the ways bottle are made. The idea was to replace the bottom parts of the bottles designs with a connector for the top parts of bottles. The premise of the whole idea was revolutionizing... if only drink making companies were interested in recycling and not money. To me, it looked like cheap plastics that were lazily made.

In the beginning of this CIPTA event, i was very excited and happy but left impressed and HUGELY disappointed. 20% of the creations were amazing and worthwhile to check up on while the rest of the other entries looked like stuff that could be easily made by anyone. Hopefully the ones that truly deserve to wins were the entries that impressed me, seeing as the rest are pretty much so-so and unimaginative. Brunei really needs to step up :L

opinion about pre-u life

3 months has passed since the start of the 1st school term and what i can say about the pre-u life?
it is way less restricting than my previous levels of education. imma break it down.

last year, I with my classmates just waited for our teachers to come into class. this year it was entirely different. WE, all pre-u students, had to move from one class to another class and then to another class. to sum it up, this year, I walked ALOT more than last year. so much so that i think I'm loosing a bit weight. the walking, to me, is not really a bad point of pre-u life. heck, its pretty good, as in that it signifies that you have more freedom in your school life.

another great thing to mention is the fact that we have less subjects than last year...BUT unfortunately more information to understand. Pre-u physics is just downright confusing. it isnt straightforward as O'level physics, its hard. i mean, really hard to grasp. never miss a lesson or you'll be as a lost as an Englishmen in China. a way to describe Pre-u physics is that its like A. Maths in words. in WORD. frustrating as it seems, i shall try my best overcome physics. heh, to think that Malay was hard.

now, on to Pre-u maths which is split into 2, which is Pure and Stats. Pure being that its Maths at its 'purest' form of use where as Stats is more of counting calculations and loads of graphs.this years' maths, to me is easy to absorb... seeing as that most of the topics we studied THIS year was nearly identical to the topics we studied in Additional Maths last year. thank Allah, i did not drop out of A.Maths or i woulda been lost like the TV series Lost.

another thing that signifies how much more freedom in pre-u life is that Design And Technology this year is VERY free. we actually were given the choice of doing anything we want which is technically both good, as in free-freaking-dom of choice and bad as in what the hell are we supposed to do. again, lost as lost. i wasnt lost cause i had so many ideas in my head to bring into life but unfortunately am restricted to one type of design.

English this year is tough. i have to admit, being a guy that speaks english throughout his life, it is tough. not straight forward. not lazy. not easy. homeworks included writing a magazine article. and truck loads of reading and commenting. i actually failed the 1st English test this year... i have never failed and gained a low score of 7 out of 25. pre-u, freedom with a cost, innit?

finally the best and worst part of being a pre-u student.

the best part for me is the personal study time or 'PS' for short. not only does this time allow us students to study, finish off hw, meet with friends, chill but to me, it gives me enough time to sleep. sleeping, to people, would seem like a poor use of PS but it isnt. it actually helps get rid of the morning tired syndrome and prepare a fresh mind for a hard subject like physics.

now the worst of this year is the shocking stacking hws this year. i actually had gotten 7 or so hws from 3 individual subjects... with in a day! maybe im exaggerating but i seriously think i got 7 hws in ONE day. Pre-u life is literally forcing so much stuff into my brain.

these last coming 2(or less) years is gonna be a rough ride and a mountain to climb but hell, whats not worth true freedom without a few challenges to overcome! i say bring it on Pre-U.

actually the worst part this year is that i am forced to make a facebook account for my animation and comics club. but instead of writing true info, im gonna mess with facebook, HAHA! if you know me well, you'd know what fake name i use.

getting the O'level results via sms................

Rumors were heard today that O'level results would be coming and those rumors turned into truth as around 5pm, i received an sms about my o'level results. as i read the whole message, feelings of loosing reality, increasing tension and super happiness filled me up! as soon as i finished reading, i went out to the balcony and screamed to the top of my voice,2 words.

"I PASSED!" for 3 loud possibly Brunei shaking times. I thanked Allah for giving me these superb results. I had even gotten a B for MALAY, the language which has plagued my mind with so much confusion for all of my life. Getting B's, A's and C may have been satisfying but finding out that you had passed a tough TOUGH exam was the ultimately satisfying victory of all that any, including me, form 5 student could have obtained. also was the fact, that after attaining such good results was the rewards of praise from families and friends.......and also the actual physical rewards of lets say *cough*a ps3*cough*.

and now that i got my O'level results, i can finally initiate my plans. one; to pick my shizz up and focus my school life and studies, and two; to enjoy the f$%# out of my life to its full potential!

glad to be an MS student! and of course one of the youS :)

oh yeah, heres a video that shows how happy I am :

charger wire repair complete!

ah, its been a long time since i've used my tool box, and oh boy its still messy as it ever was!

as to fixing the broken laptop charger's tip, i used:
a new surprisingly cheap yet efficient solder gun, my moms old trustee glue gun, a cutter,

and obviously a solder wire.
oh, and duct tape and some metal.

before the fix is the broken charger tip:

to start fixing the broken modded charger, i had to take off the hardened glue by firstly chopping it to bits, carefully so as to not the working wires, then after most of it was cut off, i used my glue gun and melted the rest off. this process took roughly about 6 hours. thankfully that day i had no hw.

the next day after school, i de-soldered the loose/broken wire which took 2 hours or less so as to avoid more conflicting wire problems. then i grabbed a new better wire and soldered on the new wire to the charger which is a very VERY tough task to do without a holding device.

after connecting the wire, dangerously might i add as the charger was still uncovered in the air, i grabbed the glue gun and covered the working charger in glue that i had chopped off before in thinner amounts than previously used.

with a working covered charger, i then took parts of an old broken laptop charger's brick metal casing and used those parts to cover the glued parts of the charger, thus giving the charger a more tougher structure as bending the tip of the charger may have been the cause of the loose/broken wire in the charger. user error.

then to put a worrying mind to rest, i layered the glue covered metal topped charger tip with layers of tight duct tape, possibly hopefully decreasing the chances of the tip bending by accident.

and with all that done, i have fixed my laptops' chargers' tip! and proudly name it charger 2.0!

comparison:
old VS new

some pics to prove it works fabulously! >:D

next thing to repair if i aint lazy, my lil sis butterfly laptop fan.

and here are more designs that impress me even more
from thedesignblog.org (a pretty cool website) that my D&T teacher suggested checking:

and heres some gundam(giant japanese humanoid shaped robots piloted by humans for non-gundam fans) designs by the awesomest coolest wickedest smartest most creative Gundam designer, Hajime Katoki-san.

the above image is one model i hope to build soon......if i have the money.....

and more sexy designs from Katoki-san.

and one last pic of the coolest motor bike design i've ever seen and wish to own:
the MP3 Piaggio scooter

and a quote from Hajime Katoki from his art book that increases my passion to be a designer:

"Do people, like myself, spend time imagining what it would be like if Gundam robots were actually present on the streets of our cities? Are you sure you're not limiting yourself to the images that were offered in the animated series? One of the reasons that I fell in love with Gundam was that it excites me to imagine what it would be like if these machines actually existed, and I worry that other fans may be losing out..."
